Young scholar Pu Songling encountered danger on his journey and had no choice but to spend the night at Lanre Temple. There, he was captured by a toad and a turtle and taken to the bottom of a strange ancient well. The two spirits competed to tell stories and forced Pu Songling to judge the quality of the stories.
